What does CEFR mean?

About the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages was developed by the Council of Europe and provides a standardised description of language competence in different European languages. It is an instrument designed to help make the language skills of people in Europe comparable.
Language skills are divided into six ascending levels: A1+A2, B1+B2, C1+C2 (elementary, independent and competent language use).

The focus is on reception (reading and listening) and production (writing and speaking).

Significance for language learners

For language learners, the Common European Framework of Reference is a useful orientation aid to better understand and assess their own language development at the respective level. By using CEFR-compatible textbooks and German exams, they can ensure that they are working towards a certain level and continuously improve their language skills.

Importance for language teachers and educational institutions

By using the CEFR, teachers can ensure that they bring their students to the right level. Furthermore, the CEFR can serve as a useful tool for planning and structuring lessons. It allows teachers to teach their students the appropriate skills required for each level. The CEFR also provides a common language reference for teachers and learners, so that everyone involved knows what is required at each level.

The CEFR and the ÖSD

The ÖSD develops all its exams according to the level descriptions of the CEFR. This enables test takers to compare their German language skills internationally, as both the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the ÖSD are widely used and recognised.
