With over 130 million German speakers worldwide, German is the most widely spoken native language in the European Union and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. The number of people learning German as a foreign language has been increasing for years.
Germany, Austria and Switzerland are among the most important countries where German is spoken. Liechtenstein is another German-speaking country – in addition to a number of countries where German is recognised as an official language or is officially considered a minority language: Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovakia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia.
For those interested, the question arises: why learn German when there are many other widely spoken languages?
One answer lies in the unique combination of cultural significance, economic relevance and international spread of the German language.
According to current statistics*, more than 15 million people worldwide are learning German as a foreign language. This is a figure that inspires us as the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) and confirms every day that we want to build bridges through education and language. We have ÖSD examination centers in around 70 countries around the world where German examinations can be taken. The ÖSD now also offers digital exams for which candidates can prepare online.
The economic strength of the German-speaking countries is a significant factor. Germany is the largest economy in Europe and one of the strongest in the world. Austria and Switzerland are also two economically successful countries.
Speaking German opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities in international companies that maintain business relations with German-speaking countries. Companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are often global market leaders in various industries, from automotive and mechanical engineering to chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
The education sector is also of great importance. Germany, Austria and Switzerland have numerous renowned universities and research institutes. Most of these institutions offer their programs in German, and an understanding of the language enables students to participate fully in academic life and benefit from the educational opportunities in these countries.
German is also one of the most important languages of science. Many important scientific papers, especially in the natural sciences and engineering, have been and continue to be written in German. Direct access to these resources can offer a significant advantage in scientific careers.
German is the language of influential poets, thinkers and artists throughout history. Learning the language makes it possible to read works by Goethe, Schiller, Kafka and many other famous personalities in the original language. Think also of the musical tradition with composers such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart and its lasting global value.
Speaking German also offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of thought of great philosophers such as Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger.
The German language thus opens doors to a rich cultural tradition and scientific treasures. It also offers a multitude of professional opportunities in a globalized world. Learning German is a worthwhile investment in the future. Anyone who speaks German has the opportunity to participate in one of the most diverse language communities in the world and to develop both personally and professionally.
