About the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages was developed by the Council of Europe and provides a standardised description of language competence in different European languages. It is an instrument designed to help make the language skills of people in Europe comparable.
Language skills are divided into six ascending levels: A1+A2, B1+B2, C1+C2 (elementary, independent and competent language use).

The focus is on reception (reading and listening) and production (writing and speaking).

Significance for language learners

For language learners, the Common European Framework of Reference is a useful orientation aid to better understand and assess their own language development at the respective level.
